HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION IN TAMPA BAY & CLEARWATER BEACH

Morning engagement session at John Chestnut Sr. Park, Palm Harbor, FL

Your engagement season deserves to be documented in a way that feels true to you. Whether you’re planning a romantic sunset session on Clearwater Beach or wandering through the streets of downtown Tampa, preparing for your engagement session can make all the difference in how your photos feel.

First things first, congratulations!!! This season goes by faster than you think, and your engagement season is more than just a box to check before the wedding day. It’s a chance to slow down, spend intentional time together, and preserve what this chapter feels like right now.

For many couples, this is also their first time being professionally photographed together. I completely understand how awkward that can feel at first. Most couples walk into their engagement session saying some version of, “we’re so awkward in photos.” I promise you are not alone. But when you put trust in your photographer, trust the process, have fun, and focus on each other instead of the camera, the time will be more enjoyable than you expect.

As a Tampa Bay wedding photographer and a 2023 bride myself, I’ve been in your shoes. I know how meaningful this season is and how important it is to feel genuinely comfortable with the person documenting it. My goal during every engagement session is to create images that feel honest, connected and true to you.

Because at the end of the day I care about more than just how your photos look. I care about preserving the feelings behind them. The quiet in-between moments, the laughter that naturally unfolds, the places that hold meaning, and the little things that make your relationship uniquely yours.

CHOOSE A LOCATION THAT FEELS LIKE YOU

One of the biggest pieces of advice I give my couples when planning their engagement session in the Tampa Bay Area is this: your location does not need to be the most popular place on Pinterest.

I know, I know, it might feel a bit contradictory to what you see online. But instead, I urge you to choose somewhere that feels personal to your relationship.

Maybe that looks like:

  • A quiet beach in Clearwater where you spend your weekends

  • Downtown Tampa riverwalk where you had your first date

  • A local favorite coffee shop you both love

  • A sailboat session along the bay

  • Cozy in-home session making pizza together

  • A field at sunset with room to run barefoot

The best engagement photos are often created when the session feels more like an experience rather than a photoshoot.

Think outside the box. Your engagement session should reflect your story and things you enjoy doing together, not just trends.

WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS

Choosing outfits for your engagement session can feel overwhelming but the most important part is comfort.

If you constantly have to adjust your outfit, pull at fabric, or wear something that doesn’t feel like you, it will show in your photos.

Outfit Tips for Engagement Sessions:

Wear something you feel confident in. Confidence photographs beautifully. Choose outfits that fit well and allow you to move naturally.

Stick to soft, timeless colors. Neutral tones, earth tones, soft blues, creams, whites, and muted colors tend to photograph beautifully.

Avoid neon colors. Bright neon greens and yellows can reflect onto your skin and create unwanted color casts in your photos.

Be careful with busy patterns. Small busy prints, logos, and distracting patterns can pull attention away from the connection between you two. Subtle textures and simple patterns usually work best during these intimate shoots.

Coordinate, don’t match. Instead of wearing identical colors, choose tones that compliment one another.

CONSIDER PROFESSIONAL HAIR & MAKEUP

If you’re debating whether or not to get your hair and makeup professionally done for your engagement session, this is your sign to do it.

Your engagement session is actually the perfect opportunity to schedule your wedding hair and makeup trial. Not only does this help you see how your hair and makeup holds up throughout the day, but it also allows you to see exactly how your makeup photographs on camera before your wedding day arrives.

Professional makeup tends to photograph softer and more polished than everyday makeup, especially in Florida humidity.

Plus, who doesn’t love getting pampered a bit. Feeling confident and cared for often helps you relax infront of the camera.

THE LITTLE DETAILS MATTER

Sometimes it’s the smallest details that make the biggest difference in your final gallery. So before your session make sure you consider the following things…

Clean your ring. Your engagement ring will absolutely be photographed. A quick professional cleaning or at home cleaning beforehand can make it sparkle beautifully in close-up shots.

Consider simple nails. Neutral or timeless nail colors or styles tend to photograph best and keep the focus feeling elegant and natural.

Steam your outfits. Wrinkles show more than most people expect in professional photos, especially in natural light. Steaming your outfits beforehand can make your images feel more polished.

Empty your pockets. Phones, keys, wallets, and hair ties can create awkward bulges or unwanted distractions.

THE BEST TIME OF DAY FOR ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS

Lighting plays a huge role in the overall feel of your photos.

Morning engagement session. Morning sessions usually have softer light, pastel skies, and a lighter, airy feel. Beaches are also typically less crowded earlier in the day, especially around St Pete Beach or Clearwater Beach.

Sunset engagement sessions. Evening sessions create warmer tones, richer colors, and that golden Florida sunset glow many couples love.

Midday sessions. I don’t always recommend midday sessions because the Florida sun and heat can be harsh, but if it fits your vision, we can absolutely make it work with the right location and equipment.

The best time ultimately depends on the experience and aesthetic you want your photos to have.

YOUR SESSION IS PLANNED, NOW HOW DO YOU PREPARE BEFOREHAND?

Preparing beforehand can help your session feel smooth, relaxed, and enjoyable.

Things to avoid before your session:

  • Trying new skincare products

  • Excessive time in the sun, sunburns, or spray tans right before photos

  • Arriving rushed or stressed

  • Alcohol the night before

Thing to do before your session:

  • Eat beforehand and stay hydrated

  • Bring comfortable shoes if walking between locations

  • Plan extra travel time for the Tampa & Clearwater Beach traffic

  • Bring a second outfit, just in case

  • Focus on connection rather than perfection

And most importantly, arrive early. Giving yourself a few moments to breathe and settle into your session makes a huge difference.

YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION IS ABOUT MORE THAN PHOTOS

At the end of the day, your engagement session is not about performing perfectly for the camera. It’s about preserving this season before it becomes a memory.

The way your hands naturally find each other. The nervous excitement before becoming husband and wife. The joy of simply being together in this special fleeting season of life.

So make it an experience. Slow down. Be present with one another. Let yourselves laugh, move, explore, and simply exist together. These are always the moments that matter most.
